Hello readers! Today I’m going to start a discussion about teeth cleaning for dogs. A couple weeks ago I got Momo and MJ’s teeth cleaned at the vet. I believe this is about the second time I’ve had their teeth professionally cleaned.
This time I was really nervous though because I’ve become more informed about dogs as the years have gone by. I’ve read articles and such online of the risks and benefits of cleaning dog’s teeth with/without anesthesia. Before a few months ago I thought the only option was to have your dog’s teeth cleaned with anesthesia. However, a friend of mine informed me that her vet does cleaning without anesthesia unless the dog absolutely needs to be put under. That intrigued me because MJ might have an enlarged heart (I’ll explain later about the “might have an enlarged heart” in a latter post), which puts him at a higher risk of complications arising as a result of being put under. I researched the pros and cons of both methods, and I came to the conclusion that for now I prefer Momo and MJ to be put under when getting their teeth cleaned. The tipping point was that I read in many places that a dog needs to be put under in order to get a full thorough cleaning. Vets cannot get rid of all the plaque deep inside the dog’s teeth without the dog being put under. You should research yourself though before deciding on which method is best for you and your dog.
Anyways, everything went smoothly with the dental cleaning, and the vet was able to get rid of all the plaque and no teeth needed to be pulled. WHEW! 
I LOVE how white their teeth are now, and I’m hoping to keep them that way for as long as possible, so now I make sure to brush their teeth after every meal, I give them nylabones to chew on, and I’m in the process of trying out this dental spray that the vet reccommended. Momo and MJ are not too fond of the dental spray, so I have to ease them into it. Hopefully, it’ll help prevent plaque, which, as all dog owners need to know, can be very dangerous to dogs.
Plaque causes peridontal disease, bad breath, wounds in gums, loosening of teeth, etc. Not only does this mean pain/discomfort for your dog, but it also means pain/discomfort for you and your wallet. (Aaaahhh…) Let me make it clear that I LOVE my dogs, and if they really need something I will do everything I can to get it for them. However, if an expense can be prevented by either me being better with their grooming/what not then I want to take preventative measures as much as possible.
